Quarteira, Vilamoura’s neighbouring resort
is located 2 kilometres east of Vilamoura marina, a short walk along
the beach.
The resort of Quarteira has a local fishing community, where you
can regularly see the fishermen at work on the western side of the
beach. The local catches can be bought from the nearby fish market
early each morning.
The palm lined promenade known as the ‘Marginal’ is
a popular place to walk, stopping to relax at one of the many outdoor
terraces of the restaurants, cafes and bars.
The beach at Quarteira is long and sandy; the water is calmed
by breakwaters making it ideal and safe for children to bathe in.
There are various water sports available from the beach including
windsurfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, water-skiing and jet-skiing.
Every Wednesday a gypsy market is held in Quarteira which is a
very popular tourist attraction. Popular buys are leather goods,
pottery, wickerwork, embroidered linens and jewellery.
Quarteira is within easy reach of the championship golf
courses in the region.
